Heute wieder einmal Schwarzweiss. Immer wieder bin ich fasziniert davon, welche Wirkung Licht gerade auf Schwarzweiss-Fotografien hinterlässt. Mit Martin Chambi (1891 – 1973) demonstriert das einer der wenigen indegenen Künstler, die über ihre Heimat hinaus bekannt wurden.

Fast in Vergessenheit geraten ist wohl diese Ausnahmekünstlerin Yma Sumac (homepage). Vereinnahmt vom amerikansichen Pop der 50er und 60er. Aber der Stimmenumfang – genial. Ich durfte sie vor einigen Jahren bei einem Konzert in Berlin live erleben. Und war erstautn, was für eine Energie die damals 70jährige auf die Bühne brachte. Leider konnten die ihr zur Seite gestellten Berliner Musiker ihrem Temperament nicht annähernd gerecht werden und zuckelten der Diva mit den Instrumenten immer ein paar Takte hinterher. almost forgotten got the exceptional artist Yma Sumac among the us pop of the fiftis and sixtis. she has a genuine voice though. i saw her performe in berlin a couple years ago. the energy she put on stage with 70 was amazing and the musicians could not really follow her. read more about her at caiman.de or on the official .com site.

Sie war eine der ersten anerkannten Fotografinnen in der Profiszene. Mich beschäftigen vor allem jene Bilder, die sie in Deutschland aufnahm. – Vor allem jenes, auf dem Familie Lisso aufgenommen wurde.
Sie war nicht nur die erste Industriefotografin sondern machte sich mit einigen Fotos als Kriegsfotografin einen Namen.

she was one of the first well known female photographer in the profi scene. i get particularely touched by the pictures she took in germany- especially the one taken from the family Lisso. she was not only the first industrial photographer but is also famous for her pictures of the war.

Frauen, die eine coole Stimme über elektornische Musik legen, erfreuen meine Gehörgänge auf hervorragende Weise. Und derer gibt es einige. Heute kommen von dieser Seite meine aktuellen Favoriten. Nichts Liebliches, aber gleichfalls keine überstrapazierten Stimmzäpfchen. Scheinbar unangestrengt – aber zu unterkühlter Musik kommt das extrem leger.

Gabor Szilasi wird von Ost-Indie begleitet

Wenn gestern schon ein Klassiker, dann heute gleich noch einer hinterher. Gabor Szilasi emigrierte in der Wirren der ungarischen 50er nach Kanada. Deshalb wird dort sein Werk besonders gewürdigt. Was mir da aus seinen Schwarzweiss-Bildern begegnet, ist faszinierend. Einfache Motive – Küche, Bad, Schlafzimmer. Und die Menschen irgendwie gerade heraus, unverstellt. Selten schön.

like yesterday so also today another classic. Gabor Szilasi did immigrate during the mess of the hungarian fiftis to canada. thats why his work is so celebrated there. what comes along with his black and white pictures is fascinating. simple subjects – kitchen, bathroom, sleeping room. and the people somehow straight, naturally. really beautiful.

Musik
Independent Musik ist selbstverständlich nicht an Grenzen gebunden, wie uns jüngst das CSS-Kollektiv aus Brasilien erneut bewies. Die seit 2 Jahren anhaltende Euphorie betreffs Kanada tut der amerikanischen Indieszene nicht wirklich weh. Einzig die Briten halten seit Jahrzehnten dagegen. Dass es sich lohnt, noch weiter über den Tellerrand zu blicken, muss eigentlich gar nicht erwähnt werden. Heute ist der alte Osten dran.

independent music is obviously not limitated, demonstrated not long ago by the CSS-collectiv from brasil. the excitment about canada which lasts for like two years is not really a problem for the american indiescene. only the english are different for decades. it pays out to look even more over the edge. today the good old east is in the line.

Starten möchte ich mit E.Z. Basic, die laut ihrem myspace-Profil richtig starmässig Freunde haben. Wer bei der ungarischen Combo umgehend an Interpol, Suicide, Ladytron und den Raveonettes denken muss, braucht sich nicht zu wundern. Die werden neben den anderen üblichen Verdächtigen als Referenz angegeben.

i would like to begin with E.Z.Basic, who have according to their myspace-profile real stars among their friends. whom the hungarian combo makes think of interpol, suicide, ladytron and the raveonettes does not have to wonder. they are mentioned as references besides the usual suspects.

Gleichfalls in Budapest zu Hause sind Zagar. In ihrer Heimat sind sie angesagte Stars und führen die elektronische Musikszene an. Ihr Sound ist eine Mischung aus Pop und Indie-Rock entlang elektronischer Leitplanken. Extrem tanzbar das Ganze und findet schon allein deshalb grossen Beifall bei mir.

also from budapest are Zagar. in their homeground they are well known stars and lead the electronic musicscene. their sound is a mix of pop and indie-rock with electronic edges. very well to dance to and already for that i like it very much.

Die nächste Band kommt aus der Tschechischen Republik, genauer aus Prag. Neulinge sind Roe-Deer nicht mehr, die Band spielt seit 1999 zum Tanz auf. In Tschechien besitzen sie eine ausgeprägte Fanbase, und wenn es um zuckersüssen Indie-Pop geht, müssen sie sich hinter angelsächsischen Kollegen sicher nicht verstecken.

the next band comes from prag. Roe-Deer are not completely new. the band exists since 1999. in czechoslowakia they have a lot of fans and they have not to hide behind english bands with their sugarsweet indie-pop.
Wie es sich anhört, wenn eine Indie-Punk-Band Jazz spielt oder umgekehrt, kann mit Belgradeyard Sound System nachempfunden werden. Das serbische Musikteam schlenzt recht experimentell um die Ecke – aber einiges – zum Beispiel das Stück hier – ist extrem gut für das Warmup auf der Tansfläche geeignet.

how it sound if an indie-punk-band plays jazz (or the other way) can be measured by Belgradeyard Sound System. the serbic musicteam does a lot of experimental stuff – but some of it – like for example this track is very good for the warmup on the dance floor.

Ansel Adams mit schwermütigem Country-Mix

Der Amerikaner Ansel Adams (1902-1984) ist vor allem für seine Schwarzweiss-Fotografien aus dem Yosemite Nationalpark bekannt. Laut Biografie war Adams ein exzelltenter Techniker, der der noch jungen Kunst immer wieder neue Impulse gab. Von meiner Seite kommt – nicht zum ersten Mal – der Verweis auf das Romantische in der frühen Schwarzweiss-Fotografie. Und wenn ich mir seine Naturfotos ansehen, fliegt mich recht deutlich auch Wehmut an. Sie machen die Tür auf zu Vergänglichkeit, Melancholie, Schwermut. Muss hin und wieder sein. Innhalten und der dunklen Seite ihr Recht einräumen.

the american Ansel Adams (1902-1984) is particularely known for his black and white pictures of the national Yosemite. his biography says that he was an excellent technician, who gave the still young hearted art new impulse. from my side comes – not for the first time – the hint for the romantic touch in the early black and white photography. and when i look at at his pictures from the nature i might easy feel grief. they open the door to melancholy, heaviness and lostness. it has to be sometimes, to rest and give the dark side its right.

Passend zum Foto gibt’s heute ein paar schwermütige, erdige Sounds. Meist altCountry. Gleich der Auftakt mit 16 Horsepower. Einer meiner Lieblingssongs dieses Genres – mit einer Intensität, die ihresgleichen sucht. 16 Pferdestärken scheinen bei dem Sond fast schon euphemistisch.

well along with the picture come today a few heavy sounds. most of it old country. to begin with its 16 Horsepower. one of my favourite tracks of this kind of music – with an intensity which is hard to beat. 16 Horsepower seem to be almost euphemistic with this song.

Klaro geht der Spuk heute mit Calexico weiter. Grossartige Combo. Spiel mir das Lied von Staub und flirrender Hitze. Komischerweise liegt bei mir Calexico immer wenn’s regnet im Player. Macht gar nichts. Ursprünglich wollte ich was mit Gesang raussuchen – weil ich diese Stimme so mag – aber dieses Stück hier ist extrem typisch und mit einer phantastischen Melodie für mein Anliegen heute.

of course Calexico follow. great combo. play me the song of dust and heat. strangely i have Calexico always in the cd player if it is raining outside. never mind. actually i wanted to look for something not only instrumental – because i like the voice so much – but this track here is extremly typical and with a fantastic melody for what i have in mind today.

Aus der amerikanischen Wüste in die kanadische Weite. Hier landen offensichtlich interessante Dinge, hat dieser wunderbare Song von Neko Case zu verkünden. Für ein paar Momente lockert die Bewölkung auf. Ihr letztes Album war ein grosser Wurf aus Kanada rüber zu den Country-Helden.

from the american desert into the canadian wilderness. here seem interesting things take ground like this wonderful song of Neko Case wants to say. for a few moments the clouds disappear almost. their last album was a great one from canada back to the country heroes.

Verbündete aus Kanada kommen mit Arcade Fire daher. Das offizielle Debütalbum muss ja niemandem mehr wirklich erklärt werden. Angespielt auch nicht – die sind ja über die Indieszene gefegt wie weiland Bob Dylan. Aus der selten guten Serie um ein Bestattungsunternehmen gibt es es musikalische Qualität zu vermelden, an der die Band beteiligt war. Ich bediene mich und lege den Hörern ans Herz, sich diese Scheiben zu kaufen.

companions from canada come up with Arcade Fire. the official first album must not really be explained to anybody. nor showed – they came across the indiescene like once bob dylan. from the really good episode about a funeral company there is a lot of music quality to follow shared by the band. i buy it and recommend to buy those albums.
People in Planes sind noch relativ neu auf meiner playlist. Aber dieses Stück gehört für mich zu den eindrücklichen Neuvorstellungen von countryeskem Rocken. Wales – ich komme!

Den Abschluss bilden passenderweise die Greenhornes mit Holy Golightly. Eine mehr als würdige Namensvetterin der Kultfigur aus Frühstück bei Tiffany. Holy Golightlys Gesang hat etwas unverschämt Lässiges.

Gábor Kerekes trifft auf Retro-Gitarren

Der Autodidakt Gábor Kerekes scheint die Zeit technologischer Entwicklung in der Fotografie zurückdrehen zu wollen. Das mutet vielleicht konservativ an. Aber der Verweigerung ausgefeilter Technik setzt er die verzückte Faszination an Details entgegen. Seit mehr als 30 Jahren fotografiert der Ungar. Mir haben es vor allem die 70er und 80er Jahre seiner Arbeiten angetan. Wie in Weichzeichner getauchte Momentaufnahmen, die in ihrer Düsternis kaum zu übertreffen sind. Ein paar dunkle Gitarren-Tracks sollen mir als vorzügliche, musikalische Untermalung dienen.

the selfteached artist Gabor Kerekes seems to turn back the technological development in photography. it might sound conservative but by refusing technology he comes up with a passionate fascination for details. for more than 30 years the hungarian is taking pics. i have a weakness particularely for his work of the seventies and eighties. captures like soaked in soft filter who are hard to beat in their darkness. a few dark guitar tracks shall give the exquisitive background.
