Den Amerikanern in den Alltag zu schauen - als Fotograf muss das die reine Freude sein. Ein Motiv jagt das nächste. Das verführt und die Falle, voyeristisch nach plakativen Vorurteilen zu suchen, ist gross wie ein Scheunentor. Man muss sie entweder lieben, die Amis, oder einer der ihren sein, um solche Bilder zu machen. Alec Soths Bilder entstehen scheinbar völlig unverkrampft, wirken aber umso stärker. Und mir fallen leider viel zu häufig jene Vokabeln ein, die wir lieber verdrängen. Trostlosigkeit, Einsamkeit, Langeweile, Ausweglosigkeit. Nur ganz selten blitzt da etwas anderes auf.
to sneak into the daily life of americans must be a true pleasure for a photographer, one subject is chasing the next. it is tempting to look in a voyoristique manner for prejudges. you either got to love the americans or be one of them to create pictures like this. Alec Soths images seem to come easy but have a strong impression. unfortunately there are all the words in my mind to it which we use to repress: loneliness, boreness, desert. only occasionaly something else is popping out.
